Sometimes the military gives you orders to a duty station you are very excited about, but sometimes you are left wondering where in the world is that? A few years ago, my family received orders to Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. I can admit my first reaction wasn’t great. I took a few days to process it, and decided to go to my next assignment with an open mind.
Of course, shortly after arriving, we were asked by many if we were outdoor enthusiasts and enjoyed camping. The answer was no. Luckily, I kept an open mind, and I have to say, looking back now, I absolutely loved that assignment. South Dakota was beautiful, and there was so much to explore. If you ever find yourself stationed in South Dakota, or planning a trip, I highly recommend you visit the following:
- Mount Rushmore: This is one of the most popular attractions in South Dakota. Military discounted tickets for parking are available.
- Custer State Park: This park is an absolute treasure that is part of the Blacks Hills! This park offers swimming, hiking, biking, camping and fishing.
- Badlands National Park: This park is a must see on your bucket list. This park can be an all day adventure, depending on how long you decide to explore. Military discounts available for service members and their dependents.
- Bear Country USA: This wildlife park can be experienced as a walk-thru or a drive-thru experience. Either way it is absolutely amazing! They feature Black Bears, Cougars, Elk, Goats and more! Military discounted tickets are available.
- Crazy Horse Memorial: Crazy Horse Memorial® honors all Indigenous people of North America. It offers three museums and scheduled cultural programs.
- The Mammoth Site: This museum is open year round. So, take a tour of the active dig site, view Ice Age Fossils, and so much more. Military discounted tickets are available.
I’m sure this list sounds overwhelming, but surprisingly, all of these destinations can be experienced in about four days. I loved that everything was conveniently located, and many of the attractions didn’t take long to explore. Every duty station is what you make of it. What I learned over the years was to make a bucket list and jump right in. South Dakota will always hold a special place in my heart. My family loved it, and I hope you will too.
